Insurance Coverage Alert for BCBS Kansas Patients

Several of our patients with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas have recently received large bills for podiatry services. When we reviewed these claims, the codes were denied by the insurance plan as “not medically necessary.” In these cases, the patient is responsible for the cost of care.

The services we have most often seen denied include:

  • Paring or cutting of corns and/or calluses
  • Trimming of non-dystrophic nails
  • Debridement of nail(s) by any method(s)
  • Trimming of dystrophic nails

We have also seen denials when a service is “not included in the patient’s plan.” Because coverage can vary, we strongly encourage you to review your policy and benefits carefully.

Why We Bill the Way We Do

Some patients have told us their insurance plan advised them to ask our office to change billing codes so services would be covered. Please understand that we cannot change codes to match coverage. We are required to bill accurately for the specific services performed during your visit.

Ultimately, patients are responsible for the cost of services not covered by their insurance plan.

Our team is committed to providing high-quality foot and ankle care, and we want you to have the information you need to avoid unexpected costs. If you have questions about your insurance coverage, please contact your plan before your appointment.
